I use them for caving. You can put thorches on ther meatpack, so they can light up a relatively big area in the cave. But never try to bring them in caves on foot, because you will always stuck in them. Put your pack in cryopods, and take them out when you are in a big area in the cave, and they will help a lot to clean the area from cave animals (this is especially good on singleplayer).
