An easy way to tame a mantis is to find one in a cave with bug repellent. Wild creatures in caves are idle, meaning they won't move unless aggro'd. Feeding a still mantis is a lot easier than feeding a moving mantis in the desert. Be sure to bring enough repellents as each only lasts 10 minutes.
